MARCH MADNESS AND A BIG MOVE!

Oh boy, do we have news.  So much is happening in March I don't know where to start!  First, and most exciting, is announcing that CGMSG is MOVING!  Don't worry--we're not going far and will be staying right in Lake Worth.  Our new location is still a bit of a secret, we'll be announcing our new address very, very soon and will be inviting you to join us for a "housewarming" party in the very near future.  We will be in our Lake Ave location untill the end of March, and plan to go out with a BANG!  March is jam-packed with events, shows, parties and more.  First up is our March 1st Friday event celebrating wood and glass.  Gallery artists Wayne Smith (glass spinning), David Cericola (wood carving), and Eric Codner (wood crafts) will be showing and demonstrating thier amazing works in glass and wood.  Please come support these wonderful artists! 

THEN, a Mug-A-Thon of epic proportions--two nights of ART, MUSIC, and BEER .  What's better than enjoying a free beer at South Shore Tavern & Patio Bar you ask?  Answer:  Enjoying said free beer in an ARTISAN HAND MADE CERAMIC MUG, that's what!!!  Come to the Gallery and reserve a hand made, glazed ceramic mug for $30.00, then on the dates of the event, MARCH 8TH AND 9TH, grab your mug and fill it with a free beer at the Tavern!  One free beer per mug.   The mugs are gorgeous, glazed and fired by some of the county's finest artists and craftsmen (and craftsWOMEN).  The mug is yours to keep, and also makes a WONDERFUL GIFT.  So, come raise a mug to help the Gallery move into our new space...all proceeds support CGMSG and our efforts to support local, independant arts and artists!

 

 

Next on the schedule is one of our favorite celebrations of silliness, our annual Peeps Show.  This year we have opened the show to all Palm Beach County artists and Peeps afficianados.  $25.00 entry fee and the chance to win $100.00 and the title of Peeps Supreme!  Contact the Gallery for more information, 561-588-8344.  Rules are simple, the diorama must be larger than a shoebox and no larger than one person can carry. You must use Peeps brand marshmallow creatures (bunnies, chicks, etc.).  NO OTHER BRANDS.  For a peep at past shows (see what I did there?), click here.  This is such a fun, cavity generating event, get your glue guns ready and join us!!!

 

 

 

And finally, we close March with a fantastic Woody Guthrie tribute concert featuring a wealth of local musical talent.  Again, a portion of the proceeds raised will support CGMSG, so get your tickets and come sing along!!!

What a Great Night!!

"Figuratively Speaking" was a fantastic success! Thanks to all who joined us last night, especially guest artists Claudia Jane Klein and Georgette Pressler. Claudia debuted her sculpture, the Wheel, which will reside outside the Gallery for the next 90 days as part of our new "Revolving Art" program. Georgette, of Devious Body Art, created an amazing work of living art by body painting a goregous model. Really spectacular!

Gallery artist Marsha Christo created hand-cut prints she applied live to anyone wearing light colored clothing who wanted an instant work of oringinal, wearable art. Many guests enjoyed not only the finished print, but the free hug that came with the process!

Give Peace a Chance...

This Friday will be very special at the Gallery. Five of our talented artists have joined forces to bring you an artistic celebration of PEACE. Gail and Howard Silverblatt, of amazing cloissone jewelry fame, will present a large Peace topiary in the front window, along with several new jewelry designs reflecting this theme. Potter Tracy Rosof-Peterson is known for her Peace designs, on mugs, vessels, plaques and more. Sheri Goldstien melts glass into amazing shapes of all colors and designs, often incorporating sprials and other peaceful images. Finally, Marica DiSylvester creates stunning teapots and vessels using natural elements and designs. The group will transform the Gallery into an artful celebration of PEACE, something we all need to support around the world.

Join us from 6 - 9 PM for edible delights, wine, and amazing ART!! See you there!

Tree Huggers of Lake Worth...UNITE!

Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery is filled with an endless variety of unique art, and unique artists. You may know Gael and Howard Silverblatt for their wonderful cloisonne jewelry, but did you also know that Gael is also in charge of the Lake Worth Tree Board's annual tree giveaway?

The 3rd Annual Shade Tree Give-Away is coming back to Lake Worth on Saturday, May 1st from 8:30 a.m. till noon at the Lake Worth City Hall parking lot located at 7 North Dixie Highway.

The Tree Board will be giving away 400 Native trees to residents living within the city limits with zip codes of 33460 and 33461. One per household with proof of residency required (like a current utility bill or a driver’s license). Those residents who rent property will have to show a note of approval from their landlords to receive a free tree. There may be help available to transport and plant the trees if needed.

The mostly native trees are 5-6 feet tall when planted. There are 16 different types of trees including Gumbo Limbo, Live Oak, Buttonwood, Mahogany, Lancewood, Stoppers, Sea Grape and Paradise Trees.

The City Commission set a goal to plant 10,000 trees by 2013 the 100th Year Anniversary of the program. Since setting this goal, the City Tree Board has given away 2000 trees.

The Tree Canopy Restoration Fund provides the funding for the trees, which is used for the planting of the tree canopy coverage in Lake Worth. The trees were purchased from Ameliascapes Garden Center, a new business opening in August at 1515 North Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

So, be sure to get your tree this weekend (say hello to Gael!) and do the planet a big favor by planting and re-greening Lake Worth!

Every Day is Earth Day!

Thanks to all our friends and supporters that came out this past Friday night in celebration of Earth Day. The Gallery was dressed for the occasion with Spanish moss, bromeliads and stands of papyrus. Joanne Davis from 1000 Friends of Florida was on hand with tons of information about this amazing environmental group, as well as Peter Robinson representing the Oceanside Green Market. The cookies from Christie's Bakery in Wellington were FANTASTIC! We offerd local foods including organic breads, local honey and edible flowers from Swank Produce--beautiful and delicious! The Lake Worth Tree Board offered free cardboard palm seedlings to our guests, and the Gallery supplied bags of wildlflower seeds to take home as well. We know how to trow a party!

Everyone had a great time enjoying the presentations, both edible and artistic! Be sure to check back as we prepare for our May events, including the Gallery's anniversary party. You won't want to miss that!

MARCHing Forward

Suddenly it's March! Time is flying and there is so much to see and do on the Avenue! The street painting festival was amazing, Lake Ave was simply transformed and everyone loved it. Crowds lined the street and we thank everyone who stopped by the Gallery while downtown. We invite you to do the same this Friday, March 5th, for a special night in the Gallery with artists Jesse Showalter, Susan Bordas, Doreen Alfaro, and Marsha Christo.

Jesse Showalter’s creative clay process begins on the wheel. “I have tried many media such as wood and metals, but my true love is working with clay. Throwing is like meditation, losing a complete sense of time and finding a quiet place within” he reveals. After years of making excellent functional ware he has discovered the joy and frustrations of the Raku and Saggar firing process using sawdust, seaweed, coconut shells, and even palm fronds as new ways of creating visual interest on elegant vessels.

Doreen Alfaro’s desire to make pottery started 6 years ago as a way to enhance her long career of catering festive occasions by using her handmade plates, cups, and bowls. As her passion for pottery evolved she became more interested in the sculptural aspect of clay while discovering the Raku process of firing. “Working with clay brings an undeniable bond to the earth, achieving great pleasure from the technique of alternative firings and connecting a natural and volatile process. Raku teaches the ability to embrace the results with a love for the element of surprise after every firing” she states.

Susan Bordas found herself falling in love with clay while traveling in the southwest collecting Native American clay art. She creates pieces that balance realistic and invented imagery with the structural textures coming from conversations with the clay. While using a variety of clay bodies the forms flow from organic to whimsical translating human emotions with an appreciation of transformations in life. Susan says “objects of art have the power to awaken our inner spirits and rekindle our spiritual being. I hope in viewing my work it speaks to you of the spirituality of the connection between human hands and the earth”.

Marsha Christo has evolved as a painter, printmaker and textile artist through a combination of mixed media, which encompasses both paper and cloth. “Like life, my work is similar to the ebb and flow of the tide, as it is forever changing, yet bonds together through process and material” she says. Impacted by tropical light, Christo a native New Englander has embraced this shift over the last twenty years, as it has clarified, “my jubilance for pattern, color and line, which pulsates as the catalyst in all that I do.”

It's February, and you know what that means...Valentine's Day! Please, forget boring chocolate or flowers...how about giving your loved one an original piece of ART from CGMS Gallery? Joyce creates amazing sculpture, Betty works with clay and glass, and Theo is a wonderful jewelry artist. You simply can't go wrong! Holy Smokes, the Holidays are HERE!

Remember the old Expose Yourself to Art poster?

Well, a group of local artists have taken that a step further. They’re exposing themselves for their art, Calendar Girls-style.

Twelve artists from Lake Worth’s Clay Glass Metal Stone co-op gallery have posed nude for a 2010 calendar with, or next to, their art. The calendar, says photographer Durga Garcia, a curator at the new Palm Beach Photographic Center in downtown West Palm Beach, is supposed to “get the word out” about relatively unknown artists.

Miss December is Sally Siegel, a glass artist from Jupiter who looks great at 82. Patricia Peters is a shapely sculptor whose body mirrors those of her bronze work, and she is Miss May. And West Palm’s Betty Wilson, also a glass artist, is Miss July as a siren in the drink with her art pieces.

There are dudes, too, and one couple. “No one is really a professional model, but they all are beautiful people,” Garcia said. Garcia made sure to cover the men and women just so. We’re all artists,” Garcia said, “so no one is really that self conscious. They’re covered in the pictures but we all got naked at some point. The only one who walked away is a man who is also a professor at Florida Atlantic University. Everything else went well and now other artists want in for next year.”

Garcia says 1,000 calendars were printed. They’re for sale at the gallery, on Lake Avenue.

Breaking News...

Two CGMS Gallery artists had a very exciting weekend recently. Gael and Howard Silverblatt, makers of fine gold cloisonne jewelry and small objects, won the $5,000 Best of Show Award at the 46th Annual Art Harvest Festival in Dunedin held Nov. 7-8. Over 250 artists were chosen to exhibit their art work and vie for the $27,500 in award money this year. The Judges were R. Andrew Maass, former Director of the Tampa Museum of Art, and Mark Ormond, current Curator of Exhibitions at the Ringling College Galleries at the Ringling College of Art & Design.
