MARCH MADNESS AND A BIG MOVE!

Oh boy, do we have news.  So much is happening in March I don't know where to start!  First, and most exciting, is announcing that CGMSG is MOVING!  Don't worry--we're not going far and will be staying right in Lake Worth.  Our new location is still a bit of a secret, we'll be announcing our new address very, very soon and will be inviting you to join us for a "housewarming" party in the very near future.  We will be in our Lake Ave location untill the end of March, and plan to go out with a BANG!  March is jam-packed with events, shows, parties and more.  First up is our March 1st Friday event celebrating wood and glass.  Gallery artists Wayne Smith (glass spinning), David Cericola (wood carving), and Eric Codner (wood crafts) will be showing and demonstrating thier amazing works in glass and wood.  Please come support these wonderful artists!

THEN, a Mug-A-Thon of epic proportions--two nights of ART, MUSIC, and BEER .  What's better than enjoying a free beer at South Shore Tavern & Patio Bar you ask?  Answer:  Enjoying said free beer in an ARTISAN HAND MADE CERAMIC MUG, that's what!!!  Come to the Gallery and reserve a hand made, glazed ceramic mug for $30.00, then on the dates of the event, MARCH 8TH AND 9TH, grab your mug and fill it with a free beer at the Tavern!  One free beer per mug.   The mugs are gorgeous, glazed and fired by some of the county's finest artists and craftsmen (and craftsWOMEN).  The mug is yours to keep, and also makes a WONDERFUL GIFT.  So, come raise a mug to help the Gallery move into our new space...all proceeds support CGMSG and our efforts to support local, independant arts and artists!

Next on the schedule is one of our favorite celebrations of silliness, our annual Peeps Show.  This year we have opened the show to all Palm Beach County artists and Peeps afficianados.  $25.00 entry fee and the chance to win $100.00 and the title of Peeps Supreme!  Contact the Gallery for more information, 561-588-8344.  Rules are simple, the diorama must be larger than a shoebox and no larger than one person can carry. You must use Peeps brand marshmallow creatures (bunnies, chicks, etc.).  NO OTHER BRANDS.  For a peep at past shows (see what I did there?), click here.  This is such a fun, cavity generating event, get your glue guns ready and join us!!!

And finally, we close March with a fantastic Woody Guthrie tribute concert featuring a wealth of local musical talent.  Again, a portion of the proceeds raised will support CGMSG, so get your tickets and come sing along!!!

WHEW!  I think that does it for March.  All of us at the Gallery thank you for your continued support of our Gallery and the many amazing local artists we include in our family.  We look forward to welcoming you to our new location, and many, many more exhibits and shows.  As always, our goal is to support local art and artists, and bring these amazing, talented folks to your attention.  We will do our best to continue to showcase excellent, local, original INDEPENDANT ART!!!  See you soon......

Our First Ever Raffle!!!!

First, Happy New Year!!!  We wish you the very best in 2013, and invite you to keep up with us online, 'cause we have a great year of ART in store for you!

Tonight launches our first monthly raffle.  As we mentioned in an earlier post, every month a CGMSG artist will be donating an original, handmade work of art to be raffled in support of CGMSG's ongoing community arts programs and general operations.  Raffle tickets cost $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00.  You can purchase right here on the blog--simply click the PayPal icon on the upper right and choose your option.  EASY AS PIE!  The winning ticket will be drawn on the first Friday of each month (in this case, Friday, February 1st) and the next raffle item will be announced here on the blog the first Saturday of each month (in this case, Saturday, February 2).  A great opportunity to win amazing art and support our Gallery!

First up, we have Tracy Rosof Petersen.  Tracy is one of our "anchor" artists, supporting us from the very beginning.  Her sculptures, pottery and mosaics are beautiful and well-known in the area.  She has generously donated a lovely lighted design, featuring her signature "Peace" sign.  Here are the details straight from Tracy:

This versatile ceramic nightlight lamp vase can be used in 3 or 4 different ways. Use it as a vase with or without water, or a candle container or as a corded nightlight lamp. Each one is created individually and glazed by hand. This low-fire stoneware is twice kiln fired to over 2000°F, the temperature of lava. Looking through the mottled sunset orange peace sign, you can see the light reflecting off the warm white interior. The outside body is a soft satiny mint green with light rust showing through the layers of glaze.

Each nightlight lamp comes with a standard UL approved 6’ nightlight cord with a toggle on/off switch and includes a 4 watt clear bulb. Each bulb has been tested before it is packed for shipment. The lamp weighs approximately 3 pounds and is 9" tall and 6.5” diameter at the widest point of the rim, side to side and 5.5 wide from front to back.

I have used a variety of light sources to most accurately represent the colors of the glazes, with the nightlight cord on and the nightlight cord off, however, colors may appear slightly different on each monitor and in your home lighting. Please email
me with any questions.

Finally Fall

Well, as of 10:30 this past Saturday, Autumn had officially arrived in South Florida.  This past weekend was the Autumn Equinox, not that you'd know it by the high 90s temps and nearly 100% humidity.  But, we Southerners can Google images of forests drenched in blazing Fall colors and imagine cool breezes not produced by air conditioners!

October is right around the corner, and we are updating our calendar with shows and events.  Our first Friday show for October 3rd will be fantastic.  Boys 2 Men II will feature works in all media created by Palm Beach County male artists aged 16 - 90!  Curated by Gallery member artist Anthony Burks Sr, this show will spotlight some of the areas finest established and emerging artists. We'll have it all--photography, mixed media, paintings and more.  Opening reception Friday, October 5, 6 - 9 PM.

Next, members artist Betty Wilson and Linda Manganaro are busy preparing for the next group show to be held at CGMSG, Artists Do The Blues, on October 19th.  Another fantastic effort, including artists from all around the county, established and emerging, presenting Blues-inspired works in all media.  Believe me, we'll have some kicking music playing that night!  And, as always, live art demos, great food and delicious wine.  There is still time to join this show--submission deadline is October 9th.  Contact Betty for more information, 561-762-8162.

So, get ready for Fall, and get ready for some great ART!!!

Summers End...Eventually!

Time is FLYING!  Summer is almost over, but you'd never know it from our hot and steamy Florida weather.  We just said a loud goodbye to hurrican Isaac, a wet event that dumped over a foot of rain in south Florida.  Flooded streets for days, what a mess!  We long for the end of hurricane season and the pleasures of the dry season.  Cooler temps, less rain.  Counting the days!

In the meantime, we're busy as ever in the Gallery.  There is a new structure in place for new artists interested in showing at CGMSG.  Local artists can now rent smaller spaces within the Gallery (we call them "shelves") for $50.00 per month.  A great way to get your work out on display and in the hands of BUYERS!!!  If you are interested, contact Gallery director Joyce Brown at 561-588-8344.  We are always looking for new artists to join us, so please stop by for more information!

We are also hosting independant shows that feature art in all mediums.  The shows are curated and run by Betty Wilson and Linda Manganaro of the Craft Gallery.  Betty has already put together two fantastic shows over the summer, with more planned for the fall.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Betty at 561-585-7744.  These shows are open to all artists, all mediums.  We'll be updating our calendar as soon as the next show is scheduled!

Tonight we celebrate AMERICAN art and artists with our Labor Day Art Show, "Made in America".  This will be a fun night featuring an old-fashioned picnic atmosphere complete with soap-box speeches by local labor leaders and a sing-along with PinkSlip.  So, come show your appreciation for local art and artisans!!!  See you at 6:00...

That's ODD......

Welcome to Summer! The days are long, and the weather is HOT. The Gallery has plenty of exhibitions, events, and shows to keep you cool. Next up is "Oddity of the Artist" on June 15th. This show, put together by Gallery artists Betty Wilson and Linda Manganaro, is a new format for CGMSG. Throughout the summer we will be hosting "open call" art shows. In other words, we are opening the Gallery, during these specific shows, to local artists (Gallery members and NON-MEMBERS) of ALL MEDIUMS, not just 3-D. Oddity will feature over 30 Florida artists showing works that reflect the unusual--the "odd" in art. You won't want to miss this show of amazing works!!! Opening reception at 6:00 pm on the 15th. Food, music, fantastic art, what more can you ask for???? Mark your calendars!

MARCH MADNESS!

Okay, this post isn't about basketball.  BUT, it is about how crazy the Gallery has been the past few months!  New artists, events, fundraisers, you name it--we do it!  Gallery Director (and wonderful ceramics artist) Joyce Brown wears more hats than a hat-rack.  Did you know that besides running the Gallery, advocating for the town and promoting Lake Worth events, she also hosts a twice weekly radio show in Lake Worth?  Tuesdays and Thursdays tune in to WPBR 1340AM for Joyce's show, from 12:00 to 1:00.  She interviews local artists and businesses while keeping you updated on the many wonderful events going on in Downtown Lake Worth.  It's a fun, loose hour with a "down home" feel.

Next, this Saturday (March 24th), we host one of our favorite fundraising arts/food event.  Do you love handmade pottery?  Do you love free, delicious food?  Then the Empty Bowls for Haiti fundraiser is FOR YOU!  The idea is simple--local artists create handmade ceramic bowls and vessels they then bring to CGMS Gallery.  You come and buy an event ticket ($25.00 in advance, 4 for $80, or $35 on the day of the event).  On Saturday the 24th, come to the Gallery to pick out a bowl you get to keep, AND fill with amazing foods offered by local Lake Worth restaurants!  Stroll the Avenue, pig out, and support the children of Jacmel, Haiti through the Arts Creation Foundation for Children.  100% of ticket sales will be donated to this great organization.  Talk about a win-win!  Every year this event gets better and better.  A great way to spend an afternoon...bring all your friends!!!  Get your tickets now, and come early on Saturday, as the bowls go FAST.  Oh, and BRING YOUR APPETITE!

Next on the horizon is another super-fun, hilarious event.  Our second annual PEEPS Art Show will be held on April 20th.  I won't give away too much here, you'll have to wait for more details, but I can say the Gallery will be covered in sticky, marshmallow art that will make you laugh, and give you cavities.  Stay tuned....

The Gift of ART...

This time of year is known as the Season of Giving. We share gifts with family, friends and loved ones, while many go without. CGMS Gallery will be doing what we can to give the gift of ART this holiday season. Beginning Dec 16th, we ask you to join us in gathering art supplies for the Lake Worth Pubic School System. Markers, crayons, paper, paints, brushes, whatever you can afford, will be distributed to local schools in support of arts instruction and education. With the economic crisis affecting our country, arts education is often the first to go when school budget cuts are implemented. We want to make sure every child has the opportunity to explore creative expression and hope you will join us! Bring your supply donation to the Gallery on the 16th through the 30th, and enjoy a glass of wine and some holiday cheer. Remember, it is better to give than to recieve...Let's all play Santa this season and support arts education in public schools!!! Call the Gallery for more information, and thanks in advance...

THE ALCHEMY OF ART!

Art is an amazing force, affecting us on many levels. Art also affects our senses, and not just visually. Sure, we see and appreciate art, but what about the other senses? Sculptures and hand-made fabrics beg to be touched, we hear music and feel joy, sorrow, and movement. Food is art, joy for our sense of taste. And fragrance affects us deeply through scent. Join us this Friday, Jan 21, as we explore how art affects all our senses. Special guest Eva Sjodin of Circle of Life Holistics will bring aromatherapy to the gallery, discussing how scent can enrich our lives. Sara Lerner and Mary Ellen Dohrs will be presenting fine porcelain and sculpture full of texture and visual delight. Come immerse your senses in ART! See you at 6:00....

UPDATE!!! Barbara the Tea Specialist will also be joining us for an organic three tea tasting! Brewing the perfect cup of tea is a true art form, and Barbara has mastered this perfectly. From the Orchid Tea Room, Barbara prepares and blends the finest organic teas to tantelize your sense of taste and smell. Come immerse yourself in a true sensory experience!!

Thanks to all that joined us last night for "Rage - Freedom of Expression". The Gallery was full, the art was amazing and the front of the Gallery was really spectacular. Gallery artists Joe Dwzill, Betty Wilson, and Joyce Brown created an amazing installation representing the BP oil disaster in the Gulf. An oil derrik featuring blood soaked dollar signs pumped oil over a destroyed beach. Turtle eggs lay broken in the sand, with hands reaching in supplication toward the sky. Gallery artist Norm Gitzen's famous "Siren" stood blindfolded and bound, helpless. New Gallery artist Yure posed an amazing bronze dinosaur over the scene, representing fossil fuels. A gripping and truly expressive installation!

The "Raging Grannies" also joined us, lending their voice in song to our concerns about the environment. What a great group of motivated, outspoken women! More photos to come soon....

Stay tuned, many more exciting events just around the corner!

The Raging Grannies join us to lend their voice to our concerns. We invite our guests to share their thoughts and emotions on our ExPreSSionS board, which will be displayed after the show. Dog DaZe - What Fun!

Friday was so great in the Gallery! We dedicated the evening to all things canine, and we had a blast. We partnered with Elite Greyhound Adoptions and Paws on the Avenue. Elite brought four greyhounds to mingle with guests and Paws provided treats for visiting dogs, great outfits for our two four-legged models, and dog bowls for our table of human treats! Gallery artist Karen McGovern created hand-stamped dog tags on the spot, donating all proceeds to Elite. As you can see, the Gallery really did "go to the dogs!"

Thanks to all our friends and supporters for joining us, special thanks to Paws, Elite and Durga Garcia, our favorite photographer.

Stay tuned, more great events on the horizon!
